Play Synopsis:

The ”Secret of Insignificance” is a full-length, Broadway-style musical set in the fictitious town of Palos against the backdrop of the Gubernatorial race in Illinois. The sitting
Governor of Illinois has achieved his high political office through “Politics and Dirty Tricks”
and is successfully eliminating the current competition by manipulating the press with half
truths. Certain residents of Palos are fed up with his scheming tactics and convince a
political underdog, the favorite son of Palos, David Delano, to challenge the Gov. David is
grappling with the notion that principled policies have no place in today’s political scene and
resigned his Ambassadorship to Switzerland over those principles. The stage is therefore
set to explore the conflict between principles and politics that weaves its way through both
acts of the play.

The opening scene is a murder that occurred in 1968 that leads into the overture. During the overture, newspaper headlines (used throughout the play) carry the audience forward to present day. We find David back in Palos and fed up with the compromise of politics. During the first act he “Rediscovers Love” with his high school sweetheart, “Judy Smith the Podiatrist,” while his father and his crony friends try to dethrone the sitting governor of Illinois. They turn to David as a possible dark horse candidate. David is reluctant and thinks they are crazy although he discovers they are all fully medicated. The Gov plays yet another dirty trick convincing David to run. The second act heightens the conflict further when the Gov and his boys discover a “Secret” that is sure to derail David’s campaign. What could the secret be? What was the murder all about in the opening scene? And, just what is the secret of insignificance? This modern day musical with a twist inside of a twist and clear clues to their resolution will answer all through its eleven pieces of original music and dance production numbers.
